Aoife Cooke wins Novice individual title and club team wins club title.
These Championships were held in conjunction with the Uneven ages All Irelands in Dungarvan on Sunday 6th December. The Youghal AC ladies team including Aoife Cook, Ruth Mellerick, Evelyn Cashman, Julie Kenneally and Lisa Walshe lined out for this race. This team had already won the County and Munster club team events and Aoife Cooke won both County and Munster individual titles.

Aoife went into the race not knowing what to expect but excitement built up at an early stage when Aoife went in to an early lead. She ran very comfortably and thrived on the underfoot conditions, She increased the lead at the half way stage and from thereon looked like a convincing winner. Ruth Mellerick who has been injured since the Munster Senior Championships in Beaufort had a brilliant run to finish in 11th. Evelyn Cashman also ran very strongly to finish in 27th place. All three of these ladies were also on the Cork team. Julie Kenneally who is in her first season of Cross country had a very good run also finishing very strongly and picking up points to the end to conclude the scoring finishing in 48th place. Lisa Walshe also ran very well.

There were scenes of jubilation and excitement as Aoife crossed the finish line to win the National Novice title. She was joined by family members and club members. It was tremendous for all the ladies to see Aoife win and when news broke that the club team had won the team title with 87 points with 2 points to spare over Dundrum South Dublin 89 points and Galway City Harriers 3rd 104 points all were thrilled and were overwhelmed. Aoife also led the Cork team to victory with 38 points; Dublin were 2nd with 76 points and Meath 3rd with 83 points. Ruth was the third scorer on the team. Earlier in the day both Ruth’s daughter Avril 5th and Evelyn’s daughter Alex 42nd ran in the U11club team which came 2nd only beaten by 3 points by Dundrum South Dublin.

Nigel Sheehan ran on the Cork Novice team. Nigel who is competing in his first Cross Country season and improving with every race had a very solid run. He was 10th for Cork which finished in 4th. There was a huge field and highly competitive. Nigel has had two wins on the road recently both the BHAA 5K in Little Island and the first race in the Cloyne 5K series.

All Ireland Uneven Ages Juvenile Cross Country Championships 06-Dec-2015

posted 14 Dec 2015, 06:14 by youghal ac   [ updated 14 Dec 2015, 06:14 ]

The rain stopped, the wind eased off and things began to look up for our juvenile athletes as they headed to Dungarvan for the National uneven age XC championship on Sunday 6th December. Conditions were surprisingly good to start despite the horrendous weather the previous few days. However it got a bit sticky and muddy underfoot as the day went on due to continuous traffic on the already damp course.

Our U11 girls got the club off to a great start with brilliant running by all the girls to win All Ireland silver club team medals. Avril Millerick led the team home with a terrific run to finish 5th overall closely followed by Sorcha Kilgannon 7th. Both girls getting individual National medals. Alex Cashman was next home in 43rd position. Avril, Sorcha and Alex were all scorers on the winning Cork team and got gold county team medals. Eireann Barrett was next in 65th position followed by Grace Rooney 93rd and Tara Hickey 98th. Well done girls on a super performance.

The U13 girls were up next and were led home by Emma Landers in 35th position. Emma was a scorer on the winning Cork team and got a gold county team medal. Eva Murphy was next in 38th position followed by Avril Cashman 50th and Erin Joyce 59th. Robyn Buckley and Rion Walsh completed the team coming 71st and 99th respectively. A great run, after an unfortunate start, by these girls who were all U12 's running up an age .

Ciaran McNamee had a super run in the U13 boys race staying with the leading group from the start. He finished 5th overall obtaining an individual National medal and was the 1st scorer for Munster , getting a silver provincial medal.

Lucy O Keeffe ran well in the U 15 girls race to finish a terrific 16th . She was the 1st scorer for Cork , winning a bronze county team medal. A brilliant result for Lucy who was running up an age.

Jake McCarthy had a brilliant run in the U15 boys race to come 7th overall and win an individual National medal. He was also on the Cork and Munster teams and added a silver provincial and silver county medal to the tally .

Aine O Regan had a great run in the U17 girls race to finish 73rd but was just outside the scoring for the Cork team.

Killian Nolan, also running up an age had a great run in the U17 boys race to finish 42nd overall and win a bronze county team medal.

Well done to all who competed. It was a huge achievement for the club just to have competitors in all bar one race , not to mention the brilliant results on the day. You can all relax now and have a well earned Christmas break.

A bright crisp day greeted the early arrivals at Santry Demesne on Sunday 22nd for the National Inter club XC championship. Youghal had 17 juvenile athletes competing and they didn't disappoint bringing home 16 all Ireland medals and displaying tremendous talent among Ireland's best.

The U12 girls were up first and Emma Landers led this super team home to finish 15th overall. She was the 5th scorer for Munster winning a silver provincial medal and 3rd scorer for Cork , getting a gold county medal. Erin Joyce was next home in 19th position followed closely by Eva Murphy 22nd and Avril Cashman 25th. Erin and Avril were also on the winning Cork team and so received gold county medals too. Avril Millerick and Robyn Buckley completed the team in 58th and 59th position respectively. Well done girls on a brilliant race and on winning silver All Ireland club team medals narrowly missing out on gold by 2 points.

Lucy O Keeffe and Lesley Cashman were up next in the U14 girls 3000m race. Lucy had a terrific race to finish in 13th place just outside the individual medals. She did however score for both Munster and Cork teams to bring home provincial and county gold medals. Lesley also had a great run as did Aine O Regan in the U16 girls race. Both girls coming 9th for their respective Cork teams.

Despite injuries the U16 Youghal boys were able to field a strong team. Jake McCarthy led the team home to finish 12th overall and win an individual National medal. He also won a gold Cork team medal as did Killian Nolan who was next home in 28th position. Killian was also a scorer for the Munster team winning a silver provincial medal. Tiarnan McCarthy and Dylan Lucey completed the team. Eoghan O Brien after a great start had to retire due to illness.

Emily O Keeffe ran well in the U18 girls race to complete the scoring for the Cork team. Unfortunately Cork were just outside the medal position in 4th place.

Fearghal Curtin and Calum Lynch lined up for the U18 boys race . Despite injury Fearghal managed to complete the 6000m race . Unfortunately both were on the Cork team which finished 4th.

Well done to all who competed and remember you ran against the best in the country. More photos available at

East Cork Uneven Ages Cross Country Championships 15-Nov-2015

posted 16 Nov 2015, 07:17 by youghal ac   [ updated 16 Nov 2015, 07:17 ]

Despite the wind and rain many of our young athletes turned out for the East Cork uneven age Cross country at Carrig na Bhfear. Conditions were tough for our juveniles on this long winding course but they didn't disappoint.

Clodagh Fitzgerald got the club off to a great start with a super run in the U9 girls race to come 3rd overall and win a bronze medal. Dylan Parker and Aidan McNamee were up next in the U9 boys race and won silver and bronze medals.

The U11 girls had a great run with Sorcha Kilgannon leading the field home to win gold. Alex Cashman was next in 4th position followed by Grace Rooney 6th and Eireann Barrett 10th. Tara Hickey came 11th followed by Ruby Kennedy 20th. Well done girls on winning gold club team medals.

Ben Walsh led the Youghal U11 boys home to finish 6th overall , followed by Jude Buckley 12th and Ronan Joyce 13th . These boys were 3rd team home and won bronze team medals . A brilliant result, as all three boys were running up an age.

Erin Joyce had a super run in the U13 girls race to finish 2nd overall and win a silver medal. Avril Cashman was next in 4th position and Natasha Kilgannon completed the team. These girls, all U12 running up an age , won team bronze medals.

Ciaran McNamee has a brilliant run in the U 13 boys race to win comfortably and obtain a gold medal. Eoin Fitzgerald was next in 9th position followed by Rory Motherway 11th and Ross Williams 15th. Well done boys on winning team silver medals.

Lesley Cashman and Kerry Barrett had great runs in the U15 girls race. Lesley was unlucky to loose out on a medal ,after what was probably the best sprint finish of the day and finished 4th. Kerry followed in 5th.

Aine O Regan had a super run in the U17 girls race to win a bronze medal. She was followed by Sarah Williams who also ran well.

Well done to the organisers who managed to run the races off very efficiently . The U17 girls ran with the senior women which saw Aine O Regan line up with her mother Celia. As the senior men's race started soon after we saw Ed O Regan running the same course too . Who said XC isn't a great family day out?
