November '23 Round Up

Weekend Update 05th November ‘23

Well done to all our young athletes who took part in the Intermediate, Novice 'B' & Juvenile 'B' Cross-Country Championships 2023 yesterday at Ballynoe, Co. Cork. In difficult running conditions we had 19 runners competing over the various age groups and the represented the club well on the day. Emma Landers was 2nd in the Intermediate Women’s 5000m, and it was great to see her back on the podium. Quin Buckley ran 4th in the Boys U15 race where Youghal AC were represented well with Connor O’ Sullivan and Cathrach O’ Laoire running good races in behind.

Anything Quin can do; mom Annmarie Holland can do better – well done to her on her 2nd overall female at the Paul Brunnock memorial ½ marathon on Saturday. Well done also to Katie Cronin who donned the green and white hoops finishing in a PB time of 2:00:35 (8 mins better than her previous time). Also, well done to coach Thomas Curran on his 5th place finish at the 50km Ultra

Well done also to our athletes who took part in ParkRun #86 at Pobalscoil Na Trionoide, especially Maurice Walsh who was the winner on the day in miserable conditions, one week on from his escapades at the Dublin City Marathon.

Well done to these young ladies today representing their universities @dcu_athletics and @uccathleticsclub in the IUAA Road Relay Championships 2023. They may not have been on the same team but they will always be a team. Well done to you all.

Weekend Update 12th November ‘23

Well done to all our young athletes who took part in Munster Athletics Senior, Under 19 & Juvenile Uneven-Age Cross-Country Championships 2023 yesterday at Two Mile Borris, Co. Tipperary. Only 4 runners made the trip to Tipp; however, great results were recorded. Aine Collins and Quin Buckley gave a great account of themselves in their respective U15 races, whilst young Olan Rochford came 10th in the U11 race securing his first Munster medal in the process. Alex Cashman put on a fantastic performance to win Gold in the U19 Girls race, two days on from her exploits at the Road Relay Championships for her university.

Sunday 12th November saw some of our athletes make the short trip to Castlelyons for the St Nicholas AC - Thomas Kent Memorial 10k 2023. Husband and wife pairing of Brian & Lisa O’ Connell took a well-deserved break from Mom and Dad duties and ran great races. Results as follows:

A busy weekend of action kicked off on Saturday morning at Beat the Train in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland, a fantastic 10 mile run along the picturesque Waterford Greenway starting and finishing at Suir Valley Railway Station, Kilmeaden. 16 of our members made their way across the county bounds on a lovely morning for running, results as follows:

The first race in the Cloyne Commons 4k series was held this morning with 258 runners crossing the finish line. Keith Kelly ran a fantastic race in second place on 13:22, proving he has regained the speed in his legs after his exploits at the Dublin Marathon a mere 3 weeks ago. Honourable mentions go to Donal Sheehan and George Bulman fresh off their runs at Beat the Train on Saturday turning out again in this race, Fiona McMahon, who recorded a PB at ParkRun on Saturday and came out again this morning and Mossy O’ Mahony 3 days after his escapades at Run in the Dark 10km.

P.S. National XC Championships to follow….

National XC Championships Even Age, U18&20 and Seniors

6 Youghal AC athletes travelled to Gowran, Kilkenny this morning for the National XC Championships, and albeit representation was sparse, the performances were fantastic. Ruby Devereaux is no stranger to the National stage, and he ran a fantastic race to finish 31st of 161 in the U14 Boys race, coming 4th for Cork ensuring he got a silver county medal.

144 athletes toed the line in the U18 & 20 Girls race and Avril Millerick lead a Youghal AC team to a silver club medal, coming in 5th place overall. Emma Landers, Avril Cashman, Alex Cashman and Robyn Buckley ran superb races back in 22nd, 26th, 40th and 113th respectively - yet another national club podium for this talented bunch of young women.

Next up, it was the turn of Fearghal Curtin in the National Senior race. Fresh off a fantastic 8th place finish in the Cardiff ½ marathon 2 weeks ago, Fearghal ran a great race finishing in 6th place overall in a stacked field of elite Irish athletes. this will be enough to qualify @fearghalcurtin for the upcoming Euros

Well done to the Youghal AC troop who travelled to Clonakilty today to take part in the half marathon and 10km races. It was a family day out for the McFarlands who both clocked huge pb’s in their half marathons and great to see @herlz09 donning the hoops for the first time, also clocking a pb. Not to be outshone, Lisa O’ Connell and Claire Kelleher also got shiny PB’s in the 10km.
