Post date: Oct 08, 2014 11:40:21 AM

The Uneven ages County Cross Country Championships were held in Clondrohid near Macroom on Sunday 5th October.

Youghal AC juvenile athletes won 18 medals. The Girls U10 team won team championship and the Boys U14 team won bronze medals. Individual medal winners included Alex Cashman 2nd, Avril Mellerick 3rd, Tara Hickey 5th U10, Charlie O’ Brien 6th U10, Jake McCarthy 2nd U14 and Fearghal Curtin 2nd U18.

Weather conditions were wet and blustery particularly during the U16 Boys race. The course was also difficult and hilly. It was great to see a ladies and men’s team in action in the Novice races before the juvenile races- well done to these parents/coaches. A separate report will follow.

Girls U10

Congratulations to the u10 Girls team who won the first team prize by a good margin. There were three of the team in the first six individual medal positions Alex Cashman 2nd, Avril Mellerick 3rd and Tara Hickey 5th. Next in to score were Sophia Connon 11th, Grace Rooney 12th, Erin Barrett 22nd and Juliette Nicholson 47th.

Boys U10

Charlie O’ Brien had a great run to finish in 6th place and winning a bronze individual medal. The other lads also put in very good performances with Liam O’ Connor finishing in 28th, Charlie O’ Brien 29th and Cameron Bennett in 48th.

Girls U12

This team was led home by Avril Cashman in 16th. Next in were Aimee Morgan 18th, Joy Nicholson 23rd and Hazel Nolan 67th.

Boys U12

The team included Ciaran McNamee 9th, Christian Mellerick 35th, Eoin Fitzgerald 36th and Ross Williams 39th.

Girls U14

Lucy O’ Keefe and Kerrie Barrett again finished in close contention with Lucy edging ahead in 9th and Kerrie in 10th place. Well done also to Tirna Cahill 42nd. Unfortunately they were short one athlete for team scoring on the day.

Boys U14

Jake O’ Brien had a brilliant run fighting hard at the front of the field from the start. He had a super strong finish in 2nd place in a strong field. Next in to score were Tom Wall 17th, Evan Villis 19th, Dylan Lucey 24th and Cian Nicholson 35th. These lads won third team prize. Well done!

Boys U16

It was such a pity that the lads were short one athlete for team as all had good runs and all running up an age. Killian Nolan was 9th and followed by Simon Upton 13th and James Wall 22nd. It was Simon’s first club race and James Wall is showing great commitment.

Girls U18

Well done to Emily O’ Keefe who ran well and finished outside of the medals.

Boys U18

Fearghal Curtin competed in this 6000m race and ran a smart race. It was his first time doing this longer distance and finished in a good 2nd position. He battled it out at the front of the field throughout. He will have a shorter distance in the U17 race in Conna on 12th.
