Youghal AC had a small number of athletes who participated in Track and Field Championships this season. Nevertheless these athletes performed superbly winning several Championships titles, medals and achieving many Personal best performances.

The season got underway early on 28th April with the Munster Junior/U23 Championships in the Cit, Cork. Michael Healy made a great return to Athletics and won three Munster titles on the day. He won the u23 High Jump 1.85m, javelin 40.24m and Discus 33.96m. Great achievement for his first outing!

Patricia Curtin who is now out of juvenile ranks won the All Ireland Schools Javelin title on 1st June. The Munster Senior and Master Championships were held on Cit on 2nd June. Michael Healy was 2nd in the Senior High Jump 1.90m, 2nd in Javelin 39.66m and 4th in Discus 32.82m. Barry Healy won the Senior 56lbs for Distance title 6.74m and was 3rd in the Discus 36.84m. It was a difficult day for Discus throwers as the throwing circle was very slippery. In the Masters Championships Declan O’ Mahoney who also made a return to Athletics and recovering from injury won two bronze medals in the o/35 Masters events; he was 3rd in the 100m 13.47 and 3rd in the Long Jump 4.67m. Ann Savage who competed for her first time ever came 2nd in the o/45 Shot. Geraldine Curtin was 1st in the 0/50 Shot. Jvolt Pelylie was 3rd in the o/35 Shot with a very good throw of 10.05m and was 4th in the Discus. It was fantastic to win 9 medals at these Championships.

The National Junior/U23 Championships were held in Tullamore on 30th June. Patricia Curtin and Michael Healy did the club proud on the day winning medals in all their events. Patricia who is recovering from an injury which she has had over the last ten months came 2nd on the day with her throw of 35.15m narrowly beaten by the winning throw of 35.95m. Conditions were atrocious during this event. Michael Healy was 3rd in the Discus 36.90m, 2nd in Javelin 36.75m and 2nd in the High Jump 1.90m. He was only beaten on count back in the High Jump. The club were very proud of their achievements at this Championship.

The County Championships were incorporated in the John Buckley Graded League Series held over the Summer months. Our athletes did very well at these events and another haul of medals and pbs were achieved. Michael Healy won the County Senior High Jump title on 7th June 1.90m and was 2nd in the Javelin 41.11m PB. Barry Healy won the County title in the 56lb for Distance 6.73m on 26th June and also the Discus title 44.29m which is his Season best and Personal best. Michael has a platinum ranking the John Buckley graded series in the high jump 1.90m and 1.93m. Patrcia Curtin got a gold ranking on 8th July in the javelin 36.41m and Lauren O’ Mahoney achieved a silver ranking 28.90m in the javelin. Nikita Savage got a silver ranking in the High Jump 1.40m. Barry Healy has platinum ranking with his throw of 44.29m in the Discus and a gold ranking in the 56lb for Distance. Fearghal Curtin also guested in the series and achieved a gold ranking and PB of 2.03.75 in the 800m

Barry Healy was invited to participate in the Morton Games in Santry in July. This is an international event and was a great honour for Barry and the club to be competing at this event. Barry finished 5th with his best throw of 43m and was very close to winning the the bronze medal. He was throwing against Ireland’s best and most experienced throwers and Barry gave a great account of himself and also got no foul throws on the day.

It was very encouraging to have three athletes travel to the Senior Championships, Patrica, Barry and Michael. Barry Healy won his first Senior medal when he won the silver medal in the 56lb for Height on 27th July. He battled it out with Dave Tierney of Leevale for first place and eventually was very narrowly beaten. Barry’s best throw was 4.30m and this was his first time doing this event. Barry also did very well finishing 5th in the Discus 42.50m and 56lbs for Distance 7.21m. Michael Healy finished 6th in the High Jump 1.90m and 7th in the Discus 37.38m which was a PB for him. Patricia finished 5th in the Javelin 37.15m which is a season best for her. It was very encouraging to see these athletes finish in top positions all of whom have lots of potential.

Barry Healy was invited to a memorial throw meet in Templemore on 3rd August in Templemore. Barry set a new National Record in the Greek Discus 5kg 24.5m which was over two metres ahead of the old record. He also won a beautiful trophy and two other titles both in the Goulding Hammer 46.48m and 56lb for Height 4m. He came 2nd in the 56lb Hammer 19.3m, 56lb Putt 5.6m and 112 lb 4.73m. He also came 2nd in the 56lb for Distance with a throw of 7.51m which was a PB. This was an outstanding day’s work for Barry who has definitely made his mark in the Irish thrower’s circle.

These athletes won 6 National medals, 13 Munster medals and 8 County medals which is very significant for a small number. Well done to all athletes and coaches. Best of luck to the Ladies team in the National League who are through in 5th place after round 1 and 2 to the final on 18th August in Tullamore in the first division. This will finish a successful track and field season. More photos available at
