County Track and Field Championships - 12th May 2013

COUNTY TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Day two of the Juvenile County Track and Field Championships were held in CIT on Sunday 12th May again in very cold and windy conditions. Well done to some very outstanding performances especially on the track. Well done to the club athletes who won County titles on the day including Grace Rooney U/9 200m,

Liam McCarthy U/14 200m, Jennifer Hennessy.U/16 800m, Sean Broderick U/15 80MH and Fearghal Curtin u/16 3000m and 800m.

Under 9

Grace Rooney won her 3rd medal when she stormed home in the 2nd heat to win the 200m title clocking the fastest time. Wells done also to Jane Savage who was a very good 5th in her heat and also to Juliette Nicholson who was 7th. Grace also won a medal in the Long Jump coming 3rd with a good jump of 3.22m. She won four medals at the Championships. Eoghan Rooney, Liam O’ Connor and Kyle Fitzgerald also competed very well in the B/9 Long Jump and 200m.

Under 10

Emma Landers, Robyn Buckley, Joy Nicholson and Eva Murphy all competed very well in the G/10 sprint with Emma just barely missing out on qualifying for the semi-final. The girls also competed well in the Turbo Javelin event. Michael Wall and Sean O’ Connor competed very well in their sprint; Sean came 3rd in the heat and qualifed for the semi-final. He narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final. The lads also did the Turbo Javelin.

Under 11

Aimee Morgan and Kira Fitzgerald competed in the 500m; Aimee finished in a very good 7th place in her heat and Kira finished in 9th place. Lilianne Pelylie did very well in the Long Jump finishing in the top six; she was leading after round one. Colm Landers and Enda Cronin had strong runs in the 500m finishing well up the field. Both lads competed well in the Turbo Javelin.

Under 12

Kerrie Barrett was 2nd in her sprint heat and 5th in the semi-final barely missing out on the final. Emma Carey was 7th in the sprint heat. Niamh O’ Brien and Emma Carey competed well in the Turbo Javelin. Cian Nicholson competed well in the U/11 sprint heats. Cian and Conor Greene also competed in the Shot with Conor coming 5th with his best throw of 5.80m.

Under 13

Faith McEvitt and Lauraleigh Baker competed at the Long Jump. Annabella Pelylie came 4th in the Javelin 12.78m, Tirna Cahill threw 12.92m, Faith McEvitt 9.95m and Lauraleigh Baker 11.29m Peter Buckley came 2nd in the U/13 Sprint Hurdles heat and Sam McSweeney came 3rd. Peter came 4th in the final and Sam came 5th. Both lads are showing great improvement at this event. Peter and Sam both competed at the High Jump also. Sam cleared 1.20m and Peter 1.15m.

Under 14

Liam McCarthy had a brilliant day; he came 2nd in the 100m heat and finished in the same order in the final to claim the silver medal. He went on to win the 200m heat and was a clear winner in the final to claim his first County title. Eoin O’ Brien also had a great run in the 800m finishing strongly to win the bronze medal just before the finish line. This was Eoin’s first A medal and was well deserved. Both lads did the Long Jump earlier in the day. Aine O’ Regan and Karynn Collins competed in the 200m with Karynn narrowly missing out on qualification for the final even with her third placing such was the high standard. Hazel Williams cleared 1.15m and Aine cleared 1.20m in the High Jump. Aine and Karynn also competed well in the 800m. Sarah Williams came 3rd in the 100m heat and was 7th in the semi-final.

Under 15

Sean Broderick won the U/15 Sprint Hurdles and was 2nd in the High Jump. Sean was Ist in the 200 heat and was a very good 2nd in the final. Ben Daly was 2nd in the 200m heat and was an unlucky 4th in the 200m final. Brid McCarthy was 4th in the 200m heat and finished 8th in the final.

Under 16

Jennifer Hennesy won the 800m race in a convincing fashion. Emily O’ Keefe was 3rd in the 100 heat and was 6th in final. Emily was 3rd in 200 heat and was 5th in final. Fearghal Curtin won the 3000m well and wen on to have a

very good race in the 800m to win with a PB of 2.06.38. Fearghal won the three M/D titles in his age group over the two days.

Under 17

Lauren O’ Mahoney came 3rd in the Javelin.

Under 18

Jack Daly came 3rd in the Shot with is throw of 10.44m and he was also 3rd in the Long Jump.

The club won 32 medals over the two days and were very pleased with al performances. There is much potential showing and some great improvements. Entries are now being taken for the County B Championships which will be

held on 26th May in conjunction with the relays. To be eligible for the County Bs you must have compted at the A Championships and age groups applicable are U9 to U13. Best of luck to all athletes at these Championships! More photos available at www.youghalac.com/photos
