Youghal AC had five athletes in action at the indoor Championships on 23rd and 24th February last. Seven medals were won and the results were very encouraging.
Eoin O’ Brien participated in the B/14 800m and Long Jump. He competed well and was very unlucky just to be outside the first eight in both events. Brid McCarthy took part in the G/15 60m sprint; she was 6th in her heat just outside qualification for the semi-final. This was her first time competing as she has only been training for a short period. Sean Broderick had an excellent championship winning three medals and achieving three PBs. He got off to a very good start on day one when he came 2nd in the B/15 High Jump. He cleared 1.60m on his third attempt and narrowly missed 1.70m. This was a PB. On day two Ben Daly and Sean Broderick both qualified well from their 60m heats for the final. It was great to see two Youghal AC lads lined up and both sprinted extremely well with Sean coming in 2nd and Ben 3rd. It was another PB for Sean; he did a time of 7.94 and Ben 8.06. Ben also participated in the 60m Hurdles but lost his balance in the early stages and did not qualify for the final. However Ben has shown hat he has potential in this event and has only been training for a few weeks. Sean Broderick again did very well in the Long Jump coming 2nd with his jump of 4.86m, another PB. Jack Daly rounded off a very successful day for the club when he won three medals; he was Ist in the B/18 Triple Jump 11.29m, 3rd in the High Jump 1.50m and 3rd in the Shot 10.12m. Well done to all – obviously the winter training is paying off!
Jack, Ben and Sean have of course qualified to compete at the new indoor track in Athlone on 23rd and 24th March. They are very much looking forward to the All Irelands and we wish them the very best of luck!
