National Track and Field League - Day 1 - 18th May 2014

Youghal AC entered two teams in the National Track and Field League in Division one, a Ladies and Mens team. Both competed very successfully on day one in Waterford on 18th May.

The men’s panel included Mossie Cahill, Barry Healy, Michael Healy, Noel Curtin, James McCarthy (guest), Daniel Colbert (guest), Fearghal Curtin, Jack Daly and Cian Greene. The men led the division in Waterford after completion of 18 events at 145 points. They had to drop three events as only 15 best are required. Full points 9 per event were obtained by Mossie Cahill in the 3000m steeplechase 12.41.63 and the hammer 21.65m, James McCarthy in the 5000m and the 1500m 4.09.03, Fearghal Curtin in the 800m 2.02.97, by Noel Curtin in the 3000m walk, Daniel Colbert in 200m 23.08 and the 400m hurdles 56.37, Barry Healy in the Discus 41.13m and 56lb for distance 7.15m and Michael Healy in the High JumpIt 75m. It was a tremendous result to have so many excellent scores. Other good results included Jack Daly 2nd in the Javelin 32.90, 2nd in the 100m and 3rd in the Triple Jumo 10.40m, Michael Healy 2nd in the Shot 9.40m, Fearghal Curtin 5th in the 400m 55.13. At the end of a long day Fearghal Curtin, James McCarthy,Mossie Cahill and Daniel Colbert lined out to do the 4 x 400m relay in which they came 2nd in a good time of 3.44.95. Sixteen teams in all completed in the Division one section between Sligo and Waterford venues on same day. Youghal AC finished 2nd overall from both venues just 4 points behind the leaders Donore Harriers. A great achievement for Youghal AC men! Well done to our younger recruits Fearghal Curtin and Jack Daly who are still in the juvenile ranks.

Our ladies team finished 4th in Waterford and 7th overall. The team was smaller and a few members were missing so the ladies completed 15 events. Patricia Curtin got full points in the javelin 35.88m as did Megan Moynihan (guest) in the Hammer 44.52m. Patricia also came 3rd in the Triple Jump 9.52m and 6th in the 100m. Evelyn Cashman came a very good 2nd in the 1500m walk 9.02.75 and 4th in the 3000m 11.11.55. Ruth Millerick competing for her first time came a very good 4th in the 1500m 5.38.51. Emily O’ Keefe came 6th in the Long Jump and 400m and 5th in the 200m, 30.07 Jennifer Hennessy came 2nd in the 800m 2.31.68, 6th in the High Jump and 3rd in the 400m hurdles. Ann Savage was 6th in the Shot 6.16m and Megan Moynihan was 3rd in the Discus 21.86. The relay team in the 4 x 400m included Evelyn Cashman, Ruth Millerick, Jennifer Hennessy and Emily O’ Keefe and came 6th. Well done Ladies and a special welcome to Emily and Jennifer who competed in the League for their first time and are both in the juvenile ranks.

Day two will take place on 22nd June at either Santry or Athlone. On conclusion of day two if both teams are ranked in the top eight on accumulation of points over two days they will make it to the final in August. Keep up the training and best of luck.
