Youghal Athletic Club (Sponsored by Youghal Credit Union)

Hello to all from Youghal AC.

This week I am going to do a Ballycotton special due to the fact that we had a high number of runners, 38 club members. It was a bitterly cold day in Ballycotton and most of the Youghal crew gathered together for some last minute advice, banter and abuse. We had five married couples running, Marty and Mary, Ed and Celia, Brian and Martina, Ken and Mary, Steve and Ricki. We also had two lots of sisters running Siobhan and Philomena Flaherty and Claire, Barbara and Isabelle Kirby.

There were many outstanding runs on the day with John Malone leading us home at 57:48 and Joe Walsh 59:31 both broke the famous 60 minute target. We had a gathering of runners under the70 min barrier lead by Thomas Curran 62:12 a great return by Noel Curtin at 63:11, Ciaran, Ken, Tom, Brian Steve and Warren all within 3 minutes of each other. The pick of that group has to be ‘Long Legs Landers’ who galloped up the last hill and improved by 12 minutes from last year. This group were closely followed by the two ‘Eddies, Eddie ‘the young gazelle’ O ‘Regan 68:19 and Ed ‘the marathon’ Nicholson 68:51. A super race from the Gazelle he was hopping off the road, one of the best performances of the day. We had the next bunch under 80 minutes lead home by our first female Mary O’Keeffe 71:23, well done good to see you back. The second woman was also in this group with Ricki Deveraux 78:01. We had Dave Mc Carthy 74:35 a super PB, also Brendan, Finbarr, Michael Buckley 77:11 a PB, George and Sylvie in this group. The next cluster contained Martina, Laura, Mary, Claire, Celia, Susan and Ann. All these girls had great runs with a few PB’s. These were followed by Willie O’Mahony who has completed all 36 races, what a record. Then came Linda, Siobhan, Philomena, Claire, Barbara, isabelle, Catherine, Anne and Olivia. There was a dispute between Siobhan and Philomena in relation to a ‘P’ stop, but I think Siobhan won out the day.

As you can see we had some magnificent runs from many of our members and well done to all who started and finished the race, it’s not easy. We had one casualty Richella O’Brien who tore her hamstring after 3 miles and had to stop, get well soon. The full results are now available on the Ballycotton website.

The prize however for the best performance of this year’s race goes to Michael Buckley who was hoping to break 80 minutes and smashed it at 77:11. Michael is dedicated at training and who has come from not even running this time last year, he is an inspiration. His performance would be closely followed by John Malone, Brian landers, Ricki Deveraux and Eddie ‘the young gazelle’ O ’Regan. Eddie wants to leave the plodders in Farrells and join the TriandRun Elite runners at Tides, he thinks they should be able to stay with his pace!

See you all on the roads during the week.

New jerseys are also available from Rickki and anyone looking for club tracksuits contacts Mossie Cahill, Frank Morrision or George Bulman.
