Munster Cross Country (Even ages ) Championships

Sponsors- Youghal Credit Union

Jake McCarthy, Jennifer Hennessy and Fearghal Curtin all win indivual medals and also Cork team medals.

The Munster Even ages Cross Country Championships were held in Beaufort, Killarney on Sunday 21st October. The club had 15 athletes in action with three running in their first Munster Championships. All ran very well on a difficult enough course; it was wet underfoot in one field and had very narrow turns especially coming into the finish.

In the Girls U10 race Lilianne Pelylie came 46th and Hazel Nolan 97th. Both girls ran very well in a very large field. In the Girls U12 Lucy O’ Keefe finished in 22nd place which was an excellent result as Lucy is U11; she was just outside the Cork medals as the standard on the Cork teams is exceptionally high this year. Next in to score was Faith McEvitt 29th, Kerrie Barret 51st, Ciara Leahy 73rd, Tirna Cahill 107th and Annabella Pelylie 110th. The team came 7th with 175 pts out of 14 teams which was a good result.

In the Boys U12 race Jake McCarthy had a tremendous race; after 1000m he pushed on from 15th place to get into 7th place finishing very strongly. Jake won a bronze individual medal for coming in the first twelve. He was also the first scorer for the Cork team which came 2nd in the inter-county division. Next into score for the team was Matthew Cody 44th,Sam McSweeney 56th, Tom Wall 56th and Evan O’ Keefe 63rd. The team came 6th with 165 pts; this was also a good result as there were a lot of teams.

The club had Killian Nolan and Eoin O’ Brien running in the U14 race. Both lads did well with both finishing very strongly together. Eoin was 38th and Killian 40th. Both have their own U13 Munsters on 11th November. Karynn Collins and Aine O’ Regan also ran in the Girls u14. Karynn finished well and unfortunately Aine had to pull out as she was feeling unwell. Again both have their U13 Munsters to look forward to.

Jennifer Hennessy showed big improvement in her form as she ran a very intelligent race in the G16 race. She paced herself well and moved from 9th to 6th place in the last 1500m of this 4000m race. Jennifer was the winner of an individual medal and she was the third scorer on the Cork team which won on count back with Waterford. Fearghal Curtin also did very well mixing with the front runners all the way; he again finished very strong adjusting pace to come in 2nd place to win the individual medal and he was the first scorer for a strong Cork team which won the inter-county section. Jennifer and Fearghal will run the u15 Munsters on 11th November also.

The club have four athletes who have qualified to run in the Even ages All Ireland Cross Country Championships in Tattersalls, Ratoath, Co. Meath on 25th November next. Lucy O’ Keefe will be the G12 Cork team; Jake McCarthy will run on the B12 Munster and Cork teams; Jennifer Hennessy will be on the G/16 Munster and Cork teams; Fearghal Curtin will also be a member of the B/16 Munster and Cork teams. Many thanks to the coaches and parents who made the day in Beaufort a very successful and enjoyable day! More photos available at www.youghalac.com/photos
