All Ireland Uneven Ages Cross Country Championships - Curragh December 2011 Jake McCarthy and Fearghal Curtin win 4 medals.
On the 12th December 2011 Youghal AC had 4 athletes in action at the Curragh in the Uneven ages All Ireland Cross Country Championships. The course was very difficult and was very narrow in places; it was also a very fast course and conditions were very cold.
Jake McCarthy who already had won an inter-county medal in Sligo (U/12) had a tremendous race in his own age group U/11 He got caught in the crowd in the earlier stages but made up fierce ground once he got space; he finished superbly in 13th place. He was so unlucky just to one place outside the individual medals. Jake however won a gold Cork inter-county medal being the first scorer; he also won a gold Munster team medal and was the 5th scorer on this team.
Killian Nolan who had a super haul of 3 medals in his own age group U/12 in Sligo also had a very good run to finish 67th and was the 6th scorer on the Cork team in the U/13 race. Cork finished in 7th place in the inter-county section.
Fearghal Curtin who won the U/14 All Ireland title in Sligo had a very good race to finish in 13th in the U/15 race. Fearghal got a very bad start having been pushed badly on the start line and this caused him to get caught in the crowd in narrow spacings. Fearghal again was unlucky not to get an individual medal but he won a Cork bronze medal and was the 2nd scorer; he also won a Munster gold team medal and was the 4th scorer on this team.
Sarah O' Sullivan who won an inter-county medal in Sligo ran in the U/15 race; she finished in 91st place and was the 5th scorer on the Cork team which finished in 6th place.
Well done to these athletes all of whom qualified and competed in two All Irelands and who gave huge comittment to training and did the club proud! Some more photos from the event are available on our photos page.
