Youghal AC Ladies win Senior & Novice Gold Team at County Road Championship, Ballintotis 4 mile
The dust has settled on the latest running of the Ballintotis 4-mile road race, which once again doubled up as the Cork County Road Championship. As always, there was a big turnout for the race with 1200 runners crossing the finish line.
Ballintotis is always a very popular race for Youghal AC members, and we arrived in our droves to support the race, on a glorious Wednesday evening. 53 fully fledged Youghal AC members, plus 21 of our couch to 4-mile group travelled to Ballintotis on the night. It was definitely a family affair too, with the mother daughter duo Geraldine & Trisha Curtin, sisters Avril & Alex Cashman, Marie & Eleanor Trihy, Christine Hennessy & Julie Rock making the short journey. The Kilgannon’s David, Claire & Sorcha, Hannigan’s Alan, Emer & Faye, Sheehan’s Anthony, Conor & Laura and Kelly’s Ted, Zara & Meg all enjoying some quality family time at the races.
Huge congratulations to our ladies, who celebrated massive success with Avril Cashman, Alex Cashman, Trisha Curtin and club Chairperson Deirdre Ansbro securing Senior and Novice Gold Team prizes for their efforts. Alex Cashman won the FJ category coming sixth female overall, and sister Avril was fifth female overall. Mary O Mahony was 2nd in her category, and one for the men, Keith Kelly came home second M45.
Huge shout out to our couch to four-mile group, who under the guidance of Ricky Ryan, Ted Kelly, Zara Kelly, Susan Dineen and Susan O Sullivan, completed a 10-week training plan and conquered the four miles last night. Congratulations to you all, we can’t wait to see what you do next. We are all very proud of you.
Week Ending 3rd April – Race Review
With eyes focused on Avril Millerick’s fantastic win at the National Intervarsity 3000M in Morton Stadium, our juveniles medal winning exploits at the East Cork Track & Field in MTU and an eye on this week’s Ballintotis 4-mile road race, we missed out on fantastic performances of others close to home and further afield.
First up was John Mason and Donna Savage, who turned a weekend away into an enjoyable experience, taking part in the Gaelforce 10km; Bray. John came a fantastic 11th place out of 587 participants in the trail run on the Sugarloaf Mountains – well done to both
Next up it was the turn of Lee Curley, who made his way to Tipperary to take part in Hellevation Munster Backyard Ultramarathon. Lee completed a superb 15 loops of the course to clock an impressive 101km, with a previous best long run of 50km. Lee also achieved his goal of finishing in the Top 15, which means he qualified for the All Irelands in August in Enniskillen
Last but by no means least, we have to mention the achievements of cousins Kelly and James O’ Mahony a bit more local, taking part in the Kinsalebeg 5km. Kelly was first lady over the line and James was second overall – big buladh bos
Next up on the local front is the East Cork Road Championship's in Ballynoe on April 24th, Midleton 5-mile on May 1st and Killeagh 4-mile on May 8th, and we would urge as many of our members to take part as possible

News just in from Boston, and Joanne O' Halloran has completed the 129th Boston Marathon 3:57:32. Joanne had a fantastic training block and was always going to improve on her PB of 4:15, but was targeting a sub 4-hr and duly obliged. Well done Jo and enjoy the rest of your family trip
Earlier today 7 or our athletes made the short trip to Aglish for the 5km Fun Run in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital. There were some superb performances, especially from our ladies who took home with Susan Dineen topping the podium, followed closely by Shannon Leigh with Kelly O’ Mahony taking third.
Claire Murphy took to the roads early this morning with a support crew of hubby Ian and daughters Holly and Lucy to take part in the Kinsale 10 mile. A nice family day out in the sunshine and a lovely run around the course in 1:29:56.
Well done to all of our runners over the weekend!!

Huge congratulations and well done to all of our juvenile athletes who participated in the county track and field championships yesterday in MTU. There were medals aplenty coming home to Youghal and each and every one of them represented Youghal AC with aplomb. Well done to you all.
Youghal AC were represented nationally and internationally at the weekend with some amazing performances all around.
Kieran Bennett travelled to take part in the hilly Connamarathon Ultra marathon (65km) and smashed it in the windy conditions in 6:51:31. What an achievement Kieran .
Donal Sheahan teamed up with a buddy and went off to Manchester for yet another marathon. He had a fantastic run in a time of 5:16:45.
David Herlihy ran in the London marathon for World Cancer Research in memory of his beloved dad Donal and did him proud by going sub 3 hr in the heat in a time of 2:57:56.
Fearghal Curtin travelled to Düsseldorf for his debut marathon and absolutely smashed it coming in fourth overall and clocking a superb time of 2:11:36. This according to some reports we have seen possibly puts him in the top ten mens Irish marathon times. A fantastic role model for our younger athletes and showing that if you train hard, it pays off.
Massive well done to all of you. Some weekend for Youghal AC.
